VVC 2007 Premiere - Rodeohead

  • 17th Aug, 2007 at 3:58 PM
love and pop black
This year's vividcon premiere from me and it's a Big Damn Vid. The longest I've edited, though it possibly doesn't feel like it.

Title: Rodeohead
Music by: Hard n Phirm
Footage from: Firefly, Serenity
Downloads: xvid version (59mb), mp4 version (better quality, 65mb)
Streaming versions: tba

The concept here is very simple - this song, in its frantic bouncing through the music of Radiohead, described to me the whole canon of Firefly. This vid is my attempt to recollect Firefly not necessarily as it was but more as I want to remember it, cherishing my favourite parts of the show and ignoring the parts I'd rather not return to.

I felt incredibly rushed finishing this video off, I had so much work to do and the deadline was looming. I still to this day get the vauge feeling that the video might actually be slightly unfinished, that I'd have played around with some of the sections. Though honestly it's unlikely to have been better, just different.

I had a lot of fun making this video and I hope fans of the show get a lot out of this vid. I've posted the lyrics below along with the Radiohead songs they come from in case people are interested in seeing how the originals compare to these bluegrass renditions.

Radiohead Song Lyrics
Everything in its Right PlaceEverything....
Everything...
Planet TelexYou can force it but it will not come.
You can taste it but it will not form.
(...chasing you home)
Everything is broken.
Everyone is broken.
2+2=5I stay home forever
but two and two always makes five.
OptimisticYou can try the best you can
You can try the best you can
Best you can is good enough.
You can try the best you can
You can try the best you can
Best you can is good enough.
Best you can is good enough...
You and Whose ArmyWe ride tonight... we ride tonight
We ride tonight... we ride tonight
Karma PoliceThis is what you get.
This is what you get.
This is what you get when you mess with us.
Knives OutSo knives out
Catch the mouse
Squash his head
Throw him in the...
CreepShe's running out again
(so effin special)

She's running out
She's run... run.. run.. run
(run run run dammit run!)
Morning BellRelease me!
Release me!
Cut the kids in half
Cut the kids in half
Cut the kids in half
How to Dissappear CompletelyThat there
that's not me
I go where I please
I'm not here
(...there he is! Two Three Four!)
Fake Plastic TreesLooks like the real thing
She tastes like the real thing
But fake plastic girl...
(nice dream)Nice dream
If you think that you're strong enough

Nice dream
If you think you belong enough

Nice dream...
Paranoid Android
Rain down,
That's it sir, you're leavin'

Rain down,
The crackle of pig skin
Come and rain down on me
The dust and the screamin', those yuppies networkin'
From a great height,
The panic, the vomit
From a great height
The panic, the vomit
God loves his children
(copy that, God loves his children)
Ten four!

This vid is fucking amazing, Ian. Definitely the highlight of the first half of Premieres for me. The more I watch it, the more I get out of it. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Thank you for making it.

MY SHOW! MY SHOW! YOU VIDDED MY ENTIRE SHOW!

I mean, if Radiohead + bluegrass doesn't cover this show's range of themes, tones, and visuals, NOTHING COULD.

Thanks for the chart! I don't know Radiohead at all, so it's helpful to know precisely where the new bits start.

There will be a Big Damn Vid Post coming soon which will contain much squee and some thinkiness about this vid, but right now I just want to say : OMGYAY.

HOLY COW.

That was amazing. Perfect use of timing and musicality. I don't know if that is a real word...I simply mean that the visuals always fit the instrumentation in some ineffable way. One small example of this was when the zooming of the planet on the screen timed to the slide in the music. I'm sure you know what I mean!

Great use of the lyrics. The song choice was wonderful; you took full advantage of its distinct segments, exploring different minithemes and miniarcs every time the music shifted. I really liked that! It made the vid very accessible, despite the swift cutting and large amount of material.

I can't beleive how LONG it was, and how the quality never dipped.

Thanks for being so fabulous at vidding!

I love that it never lets up, and the pacing doesn't let me look away, not even for a second. Also, it's horrible to have a lisping song virus in one's head.

Not to mention beautiful.

Oh, wow -- this is brilliant. I'd already seen it rec'd six ways from Sunday, plus its yours so I figured it'd be good, but I didn't realize just how gleeful it was going to make me until I watched it.

Frenetic, fast-paced, wry and funny and earnest and ironic -- this is fantastic.

Oh my god. I've been hanging out for this ever since the con reports started coming in and it's just... everything I thought it would be. Everything about it was genius and so fucking meticulously edited and so damn clever. My absolute favourite part was the Karma Police section, where I just pissed myself laughing.

Here via [info]sdwolfpup whose high praise of this vid is well warranted. Not only is the video quality and editing superb, but I love the pacing. My eyes are glued to the screen from beginning to end. One of the best and most interesting vids I've had the pleasure of viewing.

Here via [info]sdwolfpup's rec, and I just wanted to say that this vid is amazing. You've really captured the essence of Firefly/Serenity. The music is perfect for a "western in space" and the editing is fantastic. It really moves, yet nothing feels rushed. Excellent vid! Kudos.

I told you this already, but my favorite thing in this vid is the octopus at "tastes like the real thing." Hee! It's the little things, I suppose! :) I also loved the end soo much when it got really fast.. just, WOW! The ships zooming around to the music crack me up.

Oh God. Niska's appearance killed me just a little. But the funny kind of death, which is appropriate I suppose. Loved your lyric ties throughout, particularly "tastes like the real thing." Ha!

The whole thing was so playful and infectious that you almost forget about the intricate attention to motion. Almost.

This is so cool! I'm horrible at commenting on vids because I usually just take in the whole effect of the vid, and don't know what to say about individual points. So, this was great all around, and perfect for Firefly. (!)

Holy crap, this is amazing. Radiohead is my favourite band, Firefly's one of my favourite shows... so, uh, I was pretty much terrified of what this would be. But it's just, oh god, my show. That is why I love them and here it's all put together, the panic, the vomit, and just perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Thank you.

MAN.

I wasn't sure I would like this vid going from my misreading the description, but I was so wrong. It puts smile on my face just thinking about it. There's a great balance of cutesy clips with serious ones depending on the section of the track. I love that it can slip of from farce to dramatic to comedic to vaguely creepy and then right back to farce. The lip sync will always make me giggle.

LoM actually
Hi Ian,

I've actually sought you out, as i believe you're the creator of a LoM vid on YouTube which i've thoroughly enjoyed, and wanted to compliment you on - to the tune of "There is Too Much Light In This Bar"

And i've chosen to comment on the end of this post, because i'm one of the many people who adore Firefly, and i'm very excited to see this vid (its currently downloading for me)

Thank you for having similar tastes in TV to me, and for taking considerable time and effort to make GOOD vids !! ... I'm looking forward to snooping around your LJ and seeing what else i can unearth.

Hi. I just got linked to this video and I have to say, it is amazing. And I edit for a (partial) living! You have a fantastic eye and knack for timing.

My (very geeky) question though, is about the vid's tech specs--the quality of the mp4 file is crystal-clear, and I'd love to know what you used to capture the original footage and the settings you used when you compressed the final video into mp4 format.

Thanks for this awesome, awesome vid. You've got a new fan. I'm about to watch some more. : )

The source footage was taken directly from the PAL dvd releases of tv series and movie respectively, the mpeg2 footage was edited uncompressed and the final video was encoded with nero digital's mp4 codec at constant quality 18, I think it was.

I did a little sharpening magic on the tv series footage so that it could sit happily alongside the amazing Serenity movie footage.

I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

First of all, beautiful video quality! You make a strong argument for h264. And your editing is top-notch as well. Very unique song choice, I would never have thought it would have worked but it had a surprising amount of relevance to the show and characters. I love your portrayal of River from 2:24 - 2:50, with all the shooting on the lyric "Run". It's a frantic, dramatic sound that works really well for her. Also I giggled at all the bad guys around 2:00 and the excellent lip synch at 4:30. You managed to use all the little quirky sounds of the song without it beeing cheesy. It's amusing, dramatic and unique all rolled up into one.

Amazing, keeping this one. Thanks for sharing.
